How do I work in a client's books?

Your practice workspace shows you information across your clients. To actually do the work — enter a bill, reconcile the bank, run a pay run, prepare a BAS — you go into the client's own account. That's client view.

You stay signed in as yourself the whole time. Client view changes which set of books you're working in, not who you are.

Opening a client

There are three ways in:

  • From Clients, open the ⋯ menu on the client's row and choose Open in client view.
  • From the client's own page, click Open in client view in the header.
  • From the Practice Dashboard, click any client card in the Client Pipeline.

What changes

Once you're in, the whole app switches to that client:

  • The top of the sidebar shows Back to Practice and the client's name.
  • The sidebar becomes the client's own tools — Business, Bank, Invoices, Contacts, Documents, Workflows, Payroll, Tax and Reports — matching the areas that client's plan includes.
  • Your settings menu narrows to Business and Integrations only. Practice-level settings such as Billing and your practice Team aren't available while you're inside a client.

Everything you do here is recorded against your practice, so your team can see who did what in the Activity log.

Working in the client's books

Inside client view you can do anything the business owner could do — add income and expenses, categorise bank transactions, send invoices, run pay runs and lodge STP, prepare activity statements, and upload documents.

This is also where you run a client's reports. Open Reports while in client view and the report is built from that client's books. The reports in your practice workspace cover your practice's own books, so they won't show client figures.

Client view sticks until you leave

You stay in the client's books as you move around the app, and you'll still be there if you refresh the page. It isn't a one-page preview — it holds until you deliberately switch back.

Going back to your practice

Click Back to Practice at the top of the sidebar. You'll land back on Clients, the practice sidebar returns, and the client context is cleared.

If a practice tool looks missing — the Practice Dashboard, Team, Activity, Payroll, Tax or Settings → Billing — check the top of the sidebar. If it shows a client's name, you're still in client view. Click Back to Practice first.
