Member verification — common questions¶
When you add a new employee, you can ask their super fund to confirm it recognises them as a member before any money is sent. This is called a Member Verification Request (MVR) — a secure digital message between your payroll and the fund. This page answers the questions we hear most about the service.
To run a verification, see How do I verify an employee's super fund?
You'll also find a short About member verification section at the bottom of the employee's Superannuation tab in the app — click it to expand the same answers right where you verify.
Why verify at all?¶
Verification catches problems before money moves — a wrong membership number, a name or date of birth that doesn't match the fund's records, or an account that's been closed. Fixing these up front means contributions aren't rejected and returned later, and your employee receives their super on time.
Why hasn't the fund responded?¶
Member verification is new for the whole super industry, and many funds are still building their side of the service. A fund that isn't live yet simply won't reply, so your request stays Pending Fund Response. The industry is expected to be fully ready by 1 March 2027 — until then, a pending verification is normal and doesn't mean anything is wrong with your employee's details.
What should I do if there's no response within 24 hours?¶
Carry on as normal. Verification is an extra assurance check — it never blocks paying super. Keep onboarding the employee and making contributions the way you usually do. After the 24-hour window passes, the button on the employee's Superannuation tab changes to Re-send verification so you can try again later.
Which fund do I pay while verification is pending?¶
- If your employee chose a fund, keep contributing to that fund.
- If they didn't choose one, request their stapled fund details from the ATO — the stapled fund is the account that follows an employee from job to job.
- If there's no chosen or stapled fund, follow your business's default fund process.
Keep employee details accurate¶
Whether or not a fund replies to verification, accurate details are what make contributions succeed. Check the employee's:
- Tax file number (TFN)
- Membership number — their account number with the fund
- Fund USI (Unique Superannuation Identifier) — or, for an SMSF, the fund's ABN and electronic service address
You can update these anytime from the employee's Superannuation tab using Edit Super Details. Accurate details avoid delays, rejections and compliance headaches, and mean your employee receives their super on time.
