Fewer error checks under Simpler BAS¶
When you lodge a business activity statement (BAS), the figures you send are checked for errors before the statement is accepted. These error checks make sure the numbers add up and that the boxes on the form agree with each other.
Because Simpler BAS has fewer GST labels, there are fewer figures to check. Fewer figures means fewer things that can be flagged, so lodging is simpler and there is less chance of one box disagreeing with another.
In one line
Fewer GST labels under Simpler BAS means fewer figures to check when you lodge — so there is less to be flagged and less chance of a label mismatch.
Why this matters¶
Nobody enjoys having a lodgment bounce back because a figure did not match. The fewer boxes there are on the form, the fewer places an error can hide. Knowing that Simpler BAS trims the GST section helps explain why lodging a BAS is quicker and smoother than it used to be.
What you will learn¶
- That your BAS figures are checked for errors before the statement is accepted
- Why fewer GST labels means fewer figures to check
- That Simpler BAS lowers the chance of a label mismatch
Understanding the concept¶
Whenever a BAS is lodged, the figures on it are checked before the statement is accepted. The checks confirm that the numbers are the right kind of value and that related boxes agree — for example, that a total lines up with the amounts that make it up. If something does not add up, it is flagged so it can be fixed before the statement goes through.
Every box on the form is one more figure to check. The old GST section had many labels, so there were many figures that had to agree with each other. Simpler BAS cuts the GST section down to a few labels — most small businesses report only their total sales, the GST on their sales, and the GST on their purchases. With fewer labels there are simply fewer figures to check, and fewer ways for one box to disagree with another.
A label mismatch is when two related boxes on the form do not agree — for instance, a total that does not match the parts it is meant to add up to. The more labels there are, the more chances there are for a mismatch. Because Simpler BAS removes most of the extra GST labels, it removes most of the places where that kind of mismatch could happen.
None of this changes what the checks are for. They still make sure your statement is sound before it is accepted. There is just less to check, so lodging is simpler.
For accountants & bookkeepers
The reduced GST label set under Simpler BAS means the relationships that have to reconcile across the GST section are fewer than under the full method. With most entities reporting only G1, 1A and 1B for GST, there are far fewer cross-label dependencies that can be flagged at lodgment. This does not weaken the integrity of the statement — it reflects that there are fewer labels to reconcile in the first place. The GST payable is unchanged; only the number of reported figures is smaller.
Example¶
Jordan does the books for a small landscaping business and used to dread lodging the BAS. Under the old GST section there were extra labels to fill in, and now and then a figure would not agree with another, so the lodgment would be flagged and Jordan would have to go back and fix it. Under Simpler BAS, the GST section is just a few boxes — total sales, GST on sales, and GST on purchases. With only those figures to check, there is far less that can be flagged, and Jordan's BAS goes through without the back-and-forth. The tax owed is exactly the same; there is simply less to trip over.
Common mistakes¶
- Thinking fewer error checks means the numbers matter less — they still need to be right; there are just fewer of them to check.
- Assuming a smooth lodgment means Simpler BAS changed the tax — it only changed how many figures are reported and checked.
- Expecting the old extra GST labels to still be checked — most of them are gone under Simpler BAS, so they are not there to be flagged.
How this works in myaccountant¶
In the app — myaccountant reports your GST using the Simpler BAS method, so the activity statement shows the reduced set of labels. Before you lodge, myaccountant checks your figures for errors, and because there are fewer labels there is less to be flagged — so lodging is quicker and there is less chance of a label mismatch.
Key points¶
- Your BAS figures are checked for errors before the statement is accepted.
