Business Activity Statement (BAS)

Definition. A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is the form a business uses to report and pay its GST, PAYG withholding, PAYG instalments and certain other taxes to the ATO for a period.

In plain English

If your business is registered for GST, the ATO asks you to fill in a BAS each month or quarter. On it you tell the ATO how much GST you collected and paid, plus any tax you held back from staff pay and any income-tax instalments. The BAS then shows a single amount to pay the ATO, or a refund coming back to you.
